Up-Coming Trips

**SPECIAL TRIP ANNOUNCEMENT:

Bahamas, Blackbeard's Cruise- all inclusive
August 9th -15th 2008:
Greg Justice (GMU and Sea Ventures instructor) is facilitating a Sea Ventures trip to the Bahamas on
BlackBeards http://www.blackbeard-cruises.com

For the uninitiated, BlackBeard's is an all-inclusive event (Meals, drinks, 10% crew gratuity and all fees plus
3-5 dives a day are included). Airfare to George Town Exuma not included.

This will be a unusual cruise for BlackBeard's since the boat will be headed South of the Exumas and
North/West of Turks/Caicos in an area known as Hogsty Reef/Hogsty Atoll.  It is one of the deadliest
shipwreck traps in the Western Hemisphere! Located in the Southern Bahamas, approximately 50 miles
midway between Great Inagua and Crooked Island, and roughly l00 miles north of the island of Hispaniola is a
place so untouched by intruders, that it typifies the definition of the word "unspoiled". It was also a dangerous
place during the old shipping days before GPS devices existed. Almost invisible beneath deceptively tranquil
waters lays a treacherous reef of jagged coral which has claimed hundreds of ships over the last 450 years.

Named the "Dragon's Teeth" by early Spanish captains and sailors, we now know it as "HOGSTY REEF".
Hogsty Reef is one of only three true coral atolls in the Atlantic formed when the volcanic island slowly
receded into the ocean. Surrounded by waters that plunge to depths of 6,000 feet or more, two small spits of
sand in a horseshoe shaped formation encompass a crystal clear lagoon. The only entrance to the lagoon on
the West side, keeps the diving pristine. The entire formation of approximately twelve square miles provides a
lush habitat for colorful schools of butterflyfish, parrotfish angelfish, grouper and snapper abound. Away
from the protection of the reef mass, giant sharks and whales prowl the waters over the edge of the shear
walls that plunge to the depths of the ocean. Cap'n Grayson Miller will be leading our adventure.  We have
made many trips with Cap'n Grayson, and he does a great job taking us to the best locations.

We depart DC on 8 August 2008 and boarding BlackBeard's on 9 August.  Getting back in port and flying
back to DC on 15 August. (Flights aren't early enough on 9 Aug to fly in on the 9th). Hogsty Reef Bahamas

Certification and Fun Dive Weekends
So, where do you dive if you just want to get wet?  Millbrook Quarry!  Where does Sea-Ventures do all of
their open water training and certification? Millbrook Quarry! Where does just about everyone in Northern
Virginia go to get wet? Millbrook Quarry!

The lake at Millbrook Quarry will be open from early April through November on weekends for local diving.

You know our staff. You are welcome to follow along with the dives or join in for fun dives. Millbrook is a
man-made lake and is the perfect place to enjoy a day---or a weekend---of camping, picnicking and, of
course, diving.

The spring-filled lake is stocked with fish (no fishing, please) and is visited by migratory birds (geese, swans,
and ducks), turtles, beavers, deer and other wildlife. This private park is open only to divers and their guests.
Facilities are limited to porto-lets. No food or running water is available on premises, but is available nearby.

All persons five years old and up are required to purchase admission tickets. Daily admission tickets are
available at the Sea Ventures dive shop for $10 per day. Tickets purchased at the gate are $20 each. Camping
on Saturday night is available between Memorial Day and Labor Day at a rate of $5 per person.

Millbrook's camping areas are limited and will not accommodate large RV's. Out of respect for nearby
residents and other divers, portable air compressors and generators are prohibited.

Advanced Open Water Programs and individual specialties dives can be scheduled. Drop by the store, or send
us an email.

Sea Ventures Trip Report
Florida Keys Dive Trip (May 2008)

Sea Ventures and the students of Northern Virginia Community College went diving in the waters of
Pennekamp Park on the coast of the upper Florida Keys.  Eight (8) students became certified while the rest
had some great reef dives to see a variety of fish and a couple of sharks as well.  To top off the trip, the
divers experienced a great night dive. They got to watch a couple of turtles as well. A good time was had by
all.

Tell us where you want to go!  Interested in a Live-a-board? Heard about a great spot
in Cabo San Lucas? Monterrey, California? or maybe the Red Sea?  Let the staff at Sea Ventures know about
the best dive destinations, and who knows, we may be able to plan a trip in the future!  Get a group together
and we will do what we can to help you get where you need to be and provide a dive leader for the trip.
